The appliqué blocks are from photographs used with permission of David Breashears, photographer, director of the IMAX film EVEREST and book Everest, Mountain Without Mercy. The appliqué blocks depict various scenes on the climb, the string of small colorful blocks depict the prayer flags the climbers take with them to the top. Picture blocks show crossing the Khumbu Ice fall, climbing, camp etc. center large block, climbers are moving up the south ridge. The top right block—shows climbers caught too high on the mountain, as a storm approaches, trying to descend Hillary Step. Eight climbers were lost in the storm May 1996.
Hand and soft edge appliqué. Because of such interest in the climbers on Everest the inspiration for this quilt came about. Such a difficult thing to climb Everest, but I felt like I was there with every stitch.
This piece was many hours of work and planning. All of the picture blocks are hand-appliquéd.
